Crowns vs veneers: decide tooth by tooth

The question isn't really "crowns or veneers?" for your whole smile. It's which treatment each tooth needs, given what state it's in. Some need a crown, some a veneer, and plenty need neither.

Short answer

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth; a crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth. Crowns suit teeth that are broken, heavily filled, root-filled or badly worn. Veneers suit sound teeth that need a change of colour, shape or small gaps closed. Crown preparations remove about 63% to 72% of the visible tooth against about 3% to 30% for veneers in lab measurements, so for a healthy tooth a veneer, bonding or whitening is usually the kinder choice.

The ten-second version

Veneer: a thin shell on the front of a tooth that is mostly healthy. Crown: a cap over a tooth that has lost a lot of its own structure, or needs protecting. In a lab study that weighed teeth before and after preparation, full crown preps took away roughly two thirds of the visible tooth, and veneer preps took a small fraction of that. The crown route can't be undone.

Let the tooth decide

Look at each tooth on its own. Your dentist will, and so should the plan you are given.

Spotting a crown dressed up as a veneer

Much of the "Turkey teeth" coverage in the UK comes back to this. In a BBC report from 2022, a woman who believed she had paid for 26 veneers later found she had been given crowns. The words on a quote can blur the line, so check for these:

  • "Full veneer" or "360 veneer": this is a crown.
  • "Zirconium veneer": zirconia is normally used for crowns; ask whether the tooth will be reduced all round.
  • "Laminate veneer": a true veneer on the front surface.
  • Number of units equal to every tooth in the smile: ask which teeth actually need treatment, and why.

A good plan names each tooth, says crown or veneer, gives the material, and explains the reason. Our blog post on reading tooth numbers on a crown plan shows you how to check.

What research says about how long each lasts

Both last well when they're done on the right teeth. A 2021 systematic review of porcelain laminate veneers reported high long-term survival in clinical studies. For crowns, a 2026 review found five-year survival of around 97% to 98.5% for solid zirconia and E-max. The bigger difference is what happens at the end of each restoration's life: a veneer tooth still has most of its structure for the next attempt; a crowned tooth has less each time.

Mixing both in one smile

It's normal for a smile makeover to be part crowns, part veneers. For example: crowns on two front teeth that already have large fillings, veneers on the healthy teeth either side, and whitening for the lower teeth. The lab matches the materials and shades so it reads as one smile. What you should be wary of is a plan that treats every tooth the same way regardless of its condition.

Where Precious Dental stands

We prefer to protect a healthy tooth rather than crown it. If your photos suggest veneers, bonding or whitening would get you where you want to be, the written plan will say so. Our veneer specialist site turkeyveneers.co.uk, also published by Precious Dental, goes deep on the veneer side. Prices for both are on crown prices.

Common questions

Which lasts longer, a crown or a veneer?

Both can last many years. Crowns cover more and resist breakage well; veneers keep more of your own tooth, which matters for the long run because each replacement removes a bit more. The health of the tooth underneath matters more than the label.

What is a "full veneer"?

On some price lists, a "full veneer" is a crown: it covers the whole tooth. A laminate veneer covers only the front. If a quote says full veneers, ask whether your teeth will be prepared all the way round.

Can I have veneers if I have old crowns on some teeth?

Yes. Many smiles mix veneers on sound teeth with crowns where the old crowns are being replaced. The shades are matched so they look like one set.

Are veneers cheaper than crowns?

Not always. At Precious Dental an E-max laminate veneer is £300 and an E-max crown £225, because a laminate veneer takes more lab and bonding work. A zirconia crown is £150. Price shouldn't decide this; the tooth should.

Can a veneer be changed to a crown later?

Usually yes, because the veneer preparation leaves most of the tooth. Going the other way is impossible: once a tooth is prepared for a crown, it will always need a crown.
