Full mouth crowns: when a full set makes sense, and when it doesn't

A full set of crowns can rebuild a mouth that is worn, broken and patched. On healthy teeth it is the most aggressive way to change a smile there is. The decision matters more than the material.

Short answer

Full mouth crowns means crowning most or all of the teeth that show, usually 16 to 28. It is justified when many teeth are broken, heavily filled, badly worn or carry failing old crowns, and the bite needs rebuilding. It is not a good way to whiten or straighten healthy teeth, because each crowned tooth loses roughly two thirds of its outer structure and needs crowns for life. At Precious Dental, 24 zirconia crowns are £3,600 with hotel and transfers.

Who a full set is for

People who genuinely need full-mouth crowns usually have a mouth that has been patched for years. Typical pictures:

  • Teeth worn flat from grinding or acid, so the bite has collapsed and the teeth look short.
  • Many large fillings, cracks and root-filled teeth, some already broken.
  • A mixture of old crowns and bridges that are failing at the edges and no longer match.
  • Teeth damaged by a medical condition or medication.

In those cases crowning most of the teeth as one planned job can protect what is left, restore chewing and give a consistent look. Planning it as a whole also lets the dentist rebuild the bite to a sensible height instead of tooth by tooth.

Who it is not for

A full set of crowns is a poor deal for healthy teeth. A lab study that weighed prepared teeth found crown preparations removed about 63% to 72% of the visible tooth. A Scottish study of crowned teeth found that 19% of teeth that were alive when crowned showed X-ray signs of nerve-related disease later. Multiply those risks by 20 teeth and you can see why UK dentists are worried about young people with sound teeth having full sets abroad. In a BBC report in 2022, a UK dentist said that crowning 20 teeth on a 21-year-old just to change the colour would get her struck off.

If your teeth are healthy but you don't like the colour, shape or spacing, read crowns vs veneers and do you really need a crown? first. Whitening, bonding, aligners or a few veneers often get you most of the way.

How a full set is planned at Precious Dental

  1. Photos or X-ray firstYou send them from home. The dentist gives you a provisional written plan: which teeth, which material, why.
  2. Examination and X-rays in AntalyaThe plan is confirmed or changed after the dentist has seen your mouth. Decay, infection and gum problems are treated first.
  3. Preparation and digital scanTeeth are prepared and scanned. Healthy teeth that do not need crowns are left alone.
  4. Try-inYou check shape, shade and bite before anything is fixed.
  5. Fitting and recordsThe crowns are fixed, the bite is checked, and you take your guarantee and records home.

A full zirconia set is done in one visit, with 5 hotel nights in the package. The day-by-day outline is on the crown trip.

Choosing materials for a full set

Many full sets use more than one material: E-max on the front teeth for translucency, zirconia at the back for strength. People who grind are usually advised to have zirconia throughout and a night guard. The shade is chosen with your skin tone, age and lower teeth in mind; the brightest shades tend to look artificial in daylight.

Living with a full set

A full set needs more care than natural teeth, not less. The edges where crowns meet teeth can decay, gums can recede, and a crown can chip or come loose. Check-ups, cleaning between teeth and a night guard if you grind all matter. Read aftercare and longevity, and see what our 5-year guarantee covers.

Common questions

How many crowns is a full mouth?

It depends on how many teeth show when you smile and which teeth need treatment. Upper and lower smiles are often 16 to 20 teeth; a complete rebuild including back teeth can be 24 to 28.

Can I have crowns on the top teeth only?

Sometimes. The risk is a mismatch in colour and shape with the lower teeth you see when you talk. Your plan should show how the lower teeth will be handled, even if that is whitening or nothing.

Will full mouth crowns change my bite?

They can, and in worn mouths that is often the point. Changes to bite height must be planned carefully and checked at the try-in. See if your bite feels high after new crowns.

I'm in my twenties with healthy teeth. Should I get a full set?

We would almost always say no. You would be signing up for decades of crown replacements on teeth that had nothing wrong with them. See crowns in your 20s and 30s.

How much is a full set of crowns in Turkey?

At Precious Dental: 16 zirconia crowns £2,400, 20 for £3,000, 24 for £3,600, 28 for £4,200, each with 5 hotel nights, transfers and a panoramic X-ray. E-max packages are on crown prices.
